We visit World Heritage site in Nikko. Toshogu, the main facility of the World Heritage is a Shinto shrine established in 1617 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 260 years until 1868. Rinnoji Temple used to integrate the temples and shrines in Nikko including Toshogu Shrine until the Meiji Restriction in the late 19th century, when shrines and temples in Japan were forced to be separated by laws. You will not only be moved by the magnificent and solemn architectures and carvings but also can explore the history of Nikko and learn the syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism, which has been strongly influencing our lives in Japan.

My husband and I recently spent four days touring in Japan with Shoji. He patiently and expertly steered us through a very confusing combination of multiple subways rides, regular trains, tramways and cable cars, as required each day, including obtaining the requisite tickets. He is knowledgeable about a great many different areas of Japan, so he was able to guide us to Nikko, Hakone, and Kamakura - as well as multiple locations within the metro-Tokyo area. It was a pleasure to be able to explore with the same well-educated guide for all four days, and his English fluency was perfect for us as we speak no Japanese.
