Carthage was once a huge city , one of the biggest and the most prosperous of antiquity.
Today , it is the most prestigious residential area of Tunisia . Unfortunately it is all built on top the ruins , layers of stones from Punic, Roman , Vandals and Byzantine civilisations.
We offer a unique experience, biking between the corners of the city tracing old times
Le Kram Salambo
It is a Punic cemetery ,
an exeptional archaeological site with stels from the first millenarium BC .
and stories about human sacrifices..We don’t know if the carthageneans had really sacrificed their male children or it is just roman propaganda..
These ports were the basis of Carthage’s power and prosperity. A 7-hectare commercial port once bordered by quays and warehouses. A narrow channel linked this merchant port to the northern circular naval port. The military base with moorings for an incredible 220 vessels in dry docks and around the quay-lined edge.
The Magon district is located by the sea, a short distance south of the famous Antonine baths, the land was the last that had escaped urbanization.
The excavations that have been carried out there have brought to light the only visible part of the ramparts of Carthage, dating from the end of the 6th or the beginning of the 5th century BC, with its foundation blocks, of which only one weighs more than 13 tons, as well as traces of a postern next to the first bastion and casemates added in the 4th century BC.
They also allowed the discovery of remains of Punic period houses from the last period in the state of the destruction of the city by the Roman armies, and houses dating from the Roman period.
The biggest roman baths of their time..It is simply the best site of the visit ; although not much of the stones are left , all the upper parts disappeared ..Only the baths basements are visible , yet it gives a nice idea about the roman architecture; materials and techniques..
